space Nature Is Weird

We found a wild star in deep space that acts like it has a double engine, blasting radio signals from two different spots at once.

The Takeaway

Fast Radio Bursts are mysterious flashes from distant galaxies, but this specific source shows a "split personality" with two distinct patterns of signals. This suggests we are seeing pulses from two different active locations on a magnetar, providing a rare look at the extreme geography of a dead star.

From the abstract

We report the discovery of bimodal structure in the drift rate distribution of upward-drifting burst clusters from the hyperactive repeating fast radio burst FRB 20240114A. Using unsupervised machine learning (UMAP dimensionality reduction combined with HDBSCAN density-based clustering) applied to 233 upward-drifting burst clusters from the FAST telescope dataset, we identify a distinct subpopulation of 45 burst clusters (Cluster C1) with mean drift rates 2.5x higher than typical upward-drifting
