space Nature Is Weird

Some space rocks have rings that orbit at a weird tilt instead of around the middle, held there by the gravity of their own moons.

The Takeaway

We usually expect rings to sit flat around a planet's equator like Saturn. This paper proves that for smaller objects in the outer solar system, the gravitational pull of a nearby moon can actually force rings to stay permanently misaligned in a way that shouldn't happen for larger planets.

From the abstract

Recent observations have confirmed the existence of rings around minor bodies in the outer Solar System. These objects may possess satellites as well. Here we analytically investigate the interaction between such rings and satellites. We show that the perturbations from the moons may efficiently lead to off-equatorial rings around minor bodies like trans-neptunian objects or centaurs. In particular, we derive criteria for the orbital elements under which such misaligned rings may exist. These co
